Beach Memories

Easter – a long time ago

One Easter when Gregory was pretty little,  the family decided to meet at Stanley's for Easter brunch – the whole crew of us.  Julie made all of the kids a bag of Easter “goodies” which included a chicken that, when pressed down, laid bubblegum eggs.  Gregory, seated at my right,  pressed the top of his chicken and out popped a bubblegum egg.  Gregory repeated this process several times , adding several eggs to his mouth... until he found a yellow egg.   When he started to chew the yellow egg, he turned quickly to me and said excitedly.

“Grammie… Taste the yellow ones!  They taste like the beach!”
I (of course) responded as any worth-her-salt grandmother would... by testing a yellow, beach-tasting yellow gumball egg and then responding with enthusiasm, “You’re right, Gregory!”

Gregory sat there for a minute… his brows knit together, pensively… and then he turned and slowly looked up at me.

“Grammie…  How do they get the memories in the gum?”
